Group to Bring Minors to Southern Maryland

A group pushing to bring minor league baseball to Charles County said Tuesday that it hopes to build a $18 million stadium and put a team on the field in 2006.

Maryland Baseball LLC also has brought in former Baltimore Orioles great Brooks Robinson as a special assistant to help with on-field operations.

The company wants to build a state-of-the-art stadium in Hughesville that would seat about 5,000 fans.

To do that, it must secure state funding next year from the General Assembly. Maryland Baseball and Charles County have agreed to play one third apiece and company officials said they are optimistic the legislature will approve its share of the final $6 million.
